Newsletter #6

Introduction

Welcome to the sixth newsletter from the Mini-Kiwiland Shop.

In this newsletter I have news about the Taupo Hobby Expo, information about a Rolls Royce model starting at $27,000 and I would like to highlight Brekina and HaT products.

Brekina is a new brand for the Mini-Kiwiland Shop that I would like to give a try.

The latest shipment we received last week was coming from HaT, so that's an ideal opportunity to give more information about this brand.

I discovered HaT by accident when I was looking at other brands one of our main suppliers was selling. The Napoleonic figures got my attention.

Anything Napoleonic interests me. One of my ancestors once traveled with the Napoleonic army to the Russian front as a surgeon. It was a disastrous campaign for Napoleon. The Russian Cossacks took my forefather prison at some stage. He managed to return home after a few years and wrote down his adventures in a diary. This diary is still in the possession of my family.

I bought a bunch of HaT sets not expecting any interest in New Zealand, but I was pleasantly surprised there is. Not soon after the successful first trial I could buy directly from HaT and this opened the whole 1:72 military / wargamers market for the Mini-Kiwiland Shop.

About Brekina

Brekina is a model car manufacturer based in Germany that makes models for many countries such as Germany, France, the UK, USA, the Netherlands, Italy etc. Models include regular cars, trucks, trailers and buses. They are all made of plastic and in 1:87 scale only.

Brekina releases a lot of models each year and they are all available for a limited time. Sometimes items are sold out just after release. One of the reasons why Brekina is a popular brand among collectors.

The impressive catalogue of over 1200 models ranges from simple budget cars in the Brekina Basics series to highly detailed models in the Starmada series.

A lot of these models still need to be listed on our website. The first Brekina shipment is expected in July.

HaT Orders

The active HaT catalogue contains over 350 different sets. Of those sets HaT has around 83% actually in stock. Significantly better than Preiser with 43%.

HaT generally receives new stock every three months. Usually the Mini-Kiwiland Shop updates its HaT stock when HaT receives new stock from China: Every three months.

It is not known when out-of-stock items at HaT will be reproduced. This could be in the next three months, but also a year or more.

HaT does not keep anything in backorder for us. It is not a problem to cancel special out-of-stock customer orders any time as long as the special ordered item is not already on its way to New Zealand.

HaT Prices

HaT is based in the USA. This means we need to pay HaT in USD. In the past 12 months the USD has been mostly higher than our HaT prices were based on. Especially since early March the USD sky-rocketed. Unfortunately the Mini-Kiwiland Shop had no option than to increase HaT prices a few months ago. There is no intention of increasing prices any further because of changes in exchange-rates this year.

Since a year HaT does increase its own prices for items that need to be reproduced. This is due to increase of manufacturing prices in China. So far this hasn't had any effect for products at $12.90 or lower, but higher prices could be increased by 1 or 2 NZD.

Another important factor for our price calculation are the freight charges from the USA to New Zealand. I expect those to go up, but hopefully a lower USD will keep the prices in balance.

Changed HaT prices at the Mini-Kiwiland Shop are not expected this year anyway.

HaT SALE

Last week more HaT sets were put up on sale. The total HaT products on sale are 25 different sets at the moment.

HaT sets will only go on sale when there hasn't been a sale of a stocked item for over a year and stock of a set is more than 1.
Sets with only 1 item left in stock will not go on sale.

Rolls Royce Model 1:8

Rolls Royce has entered the model market by producing 1:8 scale models of the Rolls Royce Cullinan. Each of this personalized model takes 450 hours to build. It is around 65 cm long and comes with a display case of nearly 1 meter. This Cullinan features over 1000 individual scale parts. Many are not just for decoration. They actually work. The model comes with a remote that controls its headlight and taillights. When you open any of its doors, the kickplates light up.

The scale model can be fully personalized. If you want it to look exactly like the Cullinan already sitting in your driveway, no problem.

Price of this precision model starts at around 27,000 NZD.

Taupo Hobby Expo

Unfortunately the annual Hobby Expo in Taupo that was supposed to be held in July has been canceled. It should have been their 25th anniversary show.

The Hobby Expo in Taupo is an even with a nice mixture of different aspects for modellers. It has something for railway modellers, die cast collectors and all sort of built-from-scratch items. Visitors can sit down and relax with coffee and snacks. Children can spent time inside a bouncy castle. The organizing team is friendly, open minded and helpful.
This all makes it one of the best model shows in New Zealand. An example for other events in the country.

The organizing club will meet sometime in August to see if it is possible to run some sort of event later in the year.

The Mini-Kiwiland Shop had a stand on the Taupo Hobby Expo last year and intends to be present on any future show from this club.

Discontinued Products

Users of our website will receive a notification by e-mail when an item on their watchlist gets discontinued.

A discontinued item is a product that can not be ordered from our regular supplier anymore. Once out-of-stock at the Mini-Kiwiland Shop the item can not be ordered by users of our website, but can still be placed on watchlists.

Sometimes it is still possible we can get a discontinued item from somewhere else, but we cannot guarantee any price.
